Stories, tips & tools from your solo female travel expert - August edition
Where I am now 🌍
I’m writing to you from the amazing rooftop of a quiet riad in Tangier, Morocco, getting some work done before going out and get lost in this city I’ve already visited three times and absolutely love.
One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most about living in Málaga in the past few years was how easy it is to get here: in just 30 minutes, I can be in another country and another continent.
I’m currently working on a piece about Northern Morocco to help travelers discover more of this country beyond the typical 3-day trip to Marrakech, but in the meantime, you can read my Safety Guide for First-Time Solo Female Travelers to Morocco if you’re planning a visit.
Featured destination: Rainbow Mountain, PeruIf you're planning a trip to Peru this September or October, don’t miss the magical Vinicunca Mountain, aka Rainbow Mountain. Located just a few hours from Cusco, this colorful peak is as breathtaking in person as it looks online, and I mean that literally (hello, altitude!). I wrote a full guide with tips on how to prepare, what to expect, and how to avoid altitude sickness based on my own experience. This month’s travel toolkit 🎒
📱 App I’m actually using: Guruwalk
If you love discovering a city through the eyes of a local, this one’s for you. GuruWalk is a platform to book free walking tours hosted by passionate locals around the world. I’ve used it everywhere from Rabat to Hanoi and I always walk away with unexpected stories and a better sense of the place.
🌐 Site worth bookmarking: Wanderlog
A beautifully designed trip planner that helps you organize your itinerary, track expenses, store confirmation emails, and collaborate with friends. I love how simple and visual it is, way better than a Google Doc.
🧳 Download Google Maps offline before arriving:
Even if you’re planning to get a SIM or rely on Wi-Fi, having offline access to your maps saves you when you're navigating from the airport, in a cab without signal, or just walking through a city with spotty reception.
✍️ Writing prompt for fellow travelers:
What’s one unexpected encounter you had while traveling that stayed with you? Maybe it was a stranger’s kindness, a random conversation, or something that made you shift your perspective. Write it down somewhere, it’s probably more meaningful than you realized.
Travel Tip of the MonthAlways pack a lightweight scarfIt takes up zero space and it’s very useful, you could use it to cover your head, shoulders or leg when visiting religious sites, but also as a beach towel, as a layer for chilly buses, or even as a curtain when you want a bit more privacy. I never travel without one, especially in countries like Thailand, where it blends right in and comes in handy daily. | Me at Lempuyang Temple, Bali |
